V.S. Proposal for Zhuhai ASEAN Chamber of Commerce Earned Governmental Support

Seminar of ASEAN Enterprises in Zhuhai sponsored by Zhuhai Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau was held in Zhuhai Holiday Resort Hotel on November 19. Vice Mayor Chen Honghui, officials from Zhuhai Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau, State Administration of Foreign Exchange Zhuhai Branch, Zhuhai Labor and Social Security Bureau, Gongbei Customs, Zhuhai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau and other associated government bodies, and leaders from 10 enterprises with ASEAN investment in Zhuhai attended the seminar.

According to information provided by Zhuhai Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau, enterprises from 7 of the 10 ASEAN countries had invested in Zhuhai by October 2004. The total number of companies registered was 79 with a total investment amount of 1.56 billion US dollars, and the contracted amount was 630 million US dollars, or 11.56% of Zhuhai’s total amount of foreign investment. There are 58 projects involving investment from Singapore in a total amount of 540 million US dollars, 8 projects involving investment from Malaysia in a total amount of 62.67 million US dollars and other projects involving investments from Brunei, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Cambodia. Mr. Beh Kim Ling, our Chairman of the Board, raised the proposal to establish Zhuhai ASEAN Chamber of Commerce at the seminar. Mr. Beh pointed out that such a chamber of commerce would improve the mutual understanding and cooperation between the ASEAN enterprises in Zhuhai, establish an effective channel of positive communication with government bodies and drive the healthy development of ASEAN enterprises in Zhuhai. The proposal immediately received active response from Flextronics, Hongta Renheng, Huafeng Food Group, Chi Cheng Communications, IPC Property and other ASEAN enterprises. Vice Mayor, Chen Honghui, extended support and encouragement to this proposal and asked Zhuhai Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau to assist in the relevant efforts. Mr. Chen added that Zhuhai Government would support the development of foreign enterprises and improve the environment for foreign investments; as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, China Coastal Expressway, Jiangmen-Zhuhai Expressway, Guangzhou-Zhuhai Railway Line, the Pearl River Delta Intercity Light Rail Transit System and the Container Terminal and other projects were to be successively launched soon, Zhuhai would quickly become a pivot city with complete infrastructure.

Mr. Zhang Peiyu, our Executive Director, spoke at the Seminar about government policies for export-oriented enterprises and about addressing the shortage of migrant workers. Mr. Guo Zhicheng, General Manager of V.S. Industry (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., also attended the Seminar.
